Synchronization software: ActiveSync, ...
Overview
Several programs can be used to synchronize the data (WinDev application, email, calendar, contacts, tasks, notes, ...) between a PC and a mobile device (Pocket PC):
  • ActiveSync, for versions up to Windows XP.
In most cases, ActiveSync is supplied with the mobile device (Pocket PC). ActiveSync can also be downloaded from Internet.
ActiveSync is automatically started when the mobile device is connected to the PC.
The data to synchronize is configured in ActiveSync ("Options" icon).
  • the "Manager for Windows Mobile devices" available from Windows Vista. This manager is automatically started when the mobile device is connected to the PC.
Synchronizing data between a WINDEV application and a Windows Mobile application
ActiveSync allows you to synchronize the HFSQL records used both by a WINDEV application and by a Windows Mobile application.
The two applications manage the same data independently of each other. During the synchronization, the modifications performed in the database handled by the PC are automatically applied to the mobile device (and conversely).
You have the ability to specify synchronization rules. For example, you have the ability to retrieve the records regarding a specified product or the records created on a specific date.
These rules must be defined by programming.
Note: No programming is required to perform a full synchronization.
See Synchronizing data for more details.
Notes

Other ActiveSync features

ActiveSync allows you to synchronize the data between a PC and a mobile device but it can also be used to:
  • access the mobile device from a WINDEV application (via the functions for accessing the mobile devices (Pocket PCs)).
  • handle a CEDB database from a WINDEV application (via the functions for handling a CEDB database).
  • view from the PC the files found on the mobile device ("Explore" icon).
  • copy a file from the PC to the mobile device (via the file explorer).
  • automatically convert the files copied onto the mobile device. The format of the copied files will correspond to the format of the files supported by the mobile device (a ".DOC" file is converted into a ".PSW" file for example).
  • save the data found on the mobile device ("Tools .. Backup/Restore").
  • add and/or delete applications to/from the mobile device ("Tools .. Add/Remove programs").
  • transfer Access databases to and from the mobile device ("Tools .. import/Export database tables"). The Access databases correspond to CEDB databases on the mobile device.
